This is our legacy Social controller and workflow. We cannot guarantee connection with Facebook and other sources. We recommend trying our new Chat Controller for best performance and connection.
Captivate can curate and display live social media posts and reactions in your graphics, including Twitter feeds, Facebook Live and YouTube Live comments, Facebook reaction polls, and more. If you're licensed for Captivate Broadcast, complete the steps in this article to connect to a social media channel.
Note: Some of the social media features that are described in this article are not available in Captivate Present. However, if you have one of those products, you can include Facebook Live comments in your graphic.
Connecting your social media to a graphic layer
Tip: If you're licensed for Captivate Broadcast, you can include real-time YouTube Live alerts in your graphic. See Connect YouTube Live alert data to a design for details.
1. In Captivate's playout interface, open a project (if a project isn't already open) and select a Graphic Layer in the Layers Workspace.
Tip: Want to create a new graphic? Open the Library panel and drag a design from the library to the playlist. The Graphics Library > Social Media folder includes several designs that were created specifically to display polling results from Facebook comments and reactions. If you create a new graphic with a social design from the Graphics Library's Social Media Folder, your graphic is already connect to a social input, so go to step 3. If you create a new social media graphic from the any other folder in the Graphics Library, complete step 2 to add the social input to your graphic.
2. Select the new Graphic Layer in the Layer Workspace(if it's not already selected), then choose Select a data controller > Social > Social Pro and select a data source to add to your graphic.
Note: The Social Pro data source appears in the 3rd tab in the Layer Properties panel and in the Data Controller column on that Graphic Layer in your channel. In addition, the Social Pro data controller and its variables appear in the Preview panel.
3. Click the Link Data button in the Preview panel to view the Social Pro input and variables. (If the input's variables aren't visible, expand the Social Pro list.)
4. Click and drag a Social Pro variable onto an object in your graphic. Repeat this step for each variable you want to include in your graphic.
Tip: To disconnect a variable from an object in your graphic, right-click a variable in the Edit / Preview panel and choose Disconnect variable
5. In the Social Pro panel, click a social media button for type of data you want in your graphic.
- Facebook Live
- Facebook Posts
- YouTube Live
Tip: If you want to access and curate your social media feed from your Internet browser instead of from Captivate's Social Pro panel, click the Open in Browser button in the Social Pro panel.
6. Click the Login button. A new login / authorization window opens.
Note: If you're using your Internet browser instead of Captivate's Social Pro panel and you don't see the login / authorization window, your internet browser's pop-up blocker may have prevented the window from opening. Check your browser for blocked pop-ups and open the blocked window or temporarily disable your browser's pop-up blocker.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions in the login / authorization window to log in or connect to the social media account that you want to include in your graphic.
8. To set up and broadcast a social media feed, complete the steps in one of the following sections.
Facebook Live
- Enter the Video URL that you want to monitor for comments or reactions.
- In the social media screen, click the Facebook Live section that corresponds to your graphic and complete the following steps.
Comments:
- If you don't want to include every comment in the feed, enter one or more words in the Search and/or Exclude from search fields to include or exclude comments that match specific terms. You can use Boolean operators (and, or, and not) and quotations to refine your search.
- To further refine the types comments that Captivate includes in the feed, mark the checkbox for any of the filters.
- If you want Captivate to regularly monitor Facebook Live and update the feed, mark the Get comments checkbox and enter a number, in seconds, for how frequently Captivate should check for comments.
- Click the Get Comments button to display comments in the feed.
- If you want to add comments to a playlist before playing those comments in your graphic, click the Open Playlist button to open the Playlist panel, then click the + button next to each comment that you want to add to the playlist.
- Click the Play button next to each comment that you want to display in your graphic.
Reaction Polling:
- Select a Facebook reaction for each response you want to include in your poll.
- Mark the Poll from beginning of video checkbox to include all responses, including responses posted before you start polling.
- Click the Start Polling button to start the poll and display poll results in your graphic.
Comment Polling:
- Enter a word for each response that you want to include in your poll. (Click the + button to add additional responses.)
- Click the Start Polling button to start the poll and display poll results in your graphic.
- In Captivate, select the desired output from the Outputs menu.
- In Captivate's playlist, click the graphic's Play button to start the broadcast.
Facebook Posts

- If you don't want to include every post in the feed, enter one or more words in the Search and/or Exclude from search fields to include or exclude posts that match specific terms. You can use Boolean operators (and, or, and not) and quotations to refine your search.
- Mark the Filter Profanity checkbox if you want to exclude posts that include profanity.
- Click the Get Posts button to display comments in the feed.
- If you want to add posts to a playlist before playing those posts in your graphic, click the Open Playlist button to open the Playlist panel, then click the + button next to each post that you want to add to the playlist.
- Click the Play button to display that message in your graphic.
- In Captivate, select the desired output from the Outputs menu.
- In Captivate's playlist, click the graphic's Play button to start the broadcast.

- If you don't want to include every tweet in the feed, enter one or more words in the Search and/or Exclude from search fields to include or exclude tweets that match specific terms. You can use Boolean operators (and, or, and not) and quotations to refine your search(do not use spaces for names).
- To further refine the types of tweets that Captivate includes in the feed, mark the checkbox for any of the filters or click the Attitude filter.
- If you want Captivate to regularly monitor Twitter and update the feed, mark the Get comments checkbox and enter a number, in seconds, for how frequently Captivate should check for tweets.
- Click the Get Comments button to retrieve tweets.
- If you want to add comments to a playlist before playing those comments in your graphic, click the Open Playlist button to open the Playlist panel, then click the + button next to each comment that you want to add to the playlist.
- Click the Play button to display that message in your graphic.
- In Captivate, select the desired output from the Outputs menu.
- In Captivate's playlist, click the graphic's Play button to start the broadcast.
YouTube Live

- In the Chat Source drop-down list, select a channel that you're currently live-streaming from your YouTube Live account, or select Other if you want to enter a URL or video ID.
- If you selected Other in the previous step, in the Video ID field, enter the URL or video ID that you want to monitor for comments or reactions.
- If you don't want to include every comment in the feed, enter one or more words in the Search and/or Exclude from search fields to include or exclude comments that match specific terms. You can use Boolean operators (and, or, and not) and quotations to refine your search.
- Mark the Filter Profanity checkbox if you want to exclude comments that include profanity.
- Click the Get Posts button to display posts in the feed.
- Click the Get Comments button to display comments in the feed.
- If you want to add comments to a playlist before playing those comments in your graphic, click the Open Playlist button to open the Playlist panel, then click the + button next to each post or comment that you want to add to the playlist.
- Click the Play button next to each comment that you want to display in your graphic.
- In Captivate, select the desired output from the Outputs menu.
- In Captivate's playlist, click the graphic's Play button to start the broadcast.
