Flying PIP

Flying PIP offers a way to make a moving picture-in-picture effect without resorting to keyframes to animate it. It also includes controls for Outline and Drop Shadow.

Setup

It is important to understand that Flying PIP has its own animation built in. Setting the Start Point and End Point positions will cause a move between those two points. If you wish to use the keyframing of your NLE, it is best to check the Disable Animation checkbox.

  1. Set up the initial state of your picture-in-picture by setting the Position, Rotation and Zoom levels under the Start Point section. Make sure your timeline playhead is at the beginning of your clip for the most accurate view of the results.
  2. Dial in the final placement of your move by setting the Position, Rotation and Zoom under the End Point (Animation) section.
  3. If you wish your animation to have a pause at the beginning and/or end, set values in seconds into the Start and End Hold values.
  4. Finish by styling your picture-in-picture with an outline or drop shadow.

  • Disable Animation forces any values which have to do with the End Point position to be ignored. When Disable Animation is checked, only the Start Point section controls are used for your picture-in-picture placement.
  • Position controls the initial location of your video. Whether or not you’re using animation, the Position control under the Start Point section is what you will use in all cases.
  • Rotation adjusts your picture’s angle of Z rotation around a center axis.
  • Zoom sizes your picture down from the original size. Zero Zoom is the original size of your video frame, while 100 Zoom reduces the size of your picture significantly.
  • Velocity controls the behavior of how your pan and zoom behaves with differences in speed:
  • Ease In causes your animation to start gradually and then end abruptly.
  • Ease Out causes your animation to start abruptly and then end gradually.
  • Smooth causes your animation to start and end gradually.
  • Linear causes your animation to start and end abruptly and move at an even speed.
  • Start Hold is the number of seconds you wish your footage to hold still before the auto animation begins
  • End Hold is the number of seconds you wish your footage to hold still after the auto animation has ended.
  • Motion Blur adds a blur effect to your picture when it is moving from the Start to End states. You can dial in the amount of blur, depending on our desired look.
  • Aspect Ratio controls the shape of your footage inside the picture-in-picture. Any other value than 50 will crop your footage to the desired aspect.
  • Outline section allows you to add an outline to your image without the use of a separate plugin.
  • Color selects the desired color of your outline.
  • Width controls the thickness of the outline.
  • Soften feathers the edge of the outline.
  • Opacity defines the transparency of the outline.
  • Drop Shadow section creates a drop shadow effect around your media.
  • Color controls the color of your drop shadow.
  • Offset controls the distance the shadow is cast from your media.
  • Angle determines the angle of your shadow away from your media.
  • Blur dials in the amount of softening to your shadow.
  • Opacity affects the transparency of your shadow color.
