Titler Live Broadcasts' NDI implementation takes full advantage of the NDI specification and NewTek TriCaster capabilities:
- Up to 16 simultaneous NDI channels (or 2 AirSend channels for classic TriCaster.)
- Multiple simultaneous active titles per channel.
- Comprehensive TriCaster macro control over every title layer in every NDI channel.
- Full 3D titles with animated text and graphics.
- Live Feed Monitors
Open Titler Live Broadcast
Once you have installed Titler Live, run the "Titler Live Standalone" application.
When Titler Live starts, it will immediately try to connect to the network via NDI. Depending on your security preferences, this may trigger a message from your firewall asking for permission.
Be sure to select "Allow Access" or NDI will not work.
Titler Live Broadcast will open and display the user interface.
Here you can set up titles, preview them and play them.
Titler Live Layout
The Titler Live screen is composed of four sections.
Library
The Library carries all the title templates in your system.
These can be templates that come with Titler Live, custom templates you have created and template collections you may have purchased.
Explore the range of templates by opening folders and mousing over template icons.
When you hover over a template, it quickly loads and previews in the screen to the right.
Project
Below the Library is the currently loaded project.
The project is composed of one or more playlists. A playlist is a set of one or more titles that are ready to play during the broadcast.
Each playlist is assigned a tab and its own specific NDI channel.
In this case, the playlist/ NDI channels are called Bugs, Lower 3rds and Scoreboard.
Drag a template from the Library into a playlist to create a title.
Click on a title in the playlist to display it in the preview and edit its values to the right.
Trigger a title for playback by clicking on the dot on the far right and clicking on one of the action buttons at the top of the list. For more information on action buttons, see Action Buttons
Load and Save projects from the File Menu.
Preview
See the currently selected title in the Preview. Use this to view edits made to the title.
You may also reposition and scale the title from this window by clicking on the title and using the yellow handles.
Click on the Preview In and Preview Out buttons to preview the transition animations.
Variables
The variable text field lets you edit all the parameters of the currently selected title.
Edit the title values, from text to color in the editor or open the Title Designer by clicking on the "Title Designer" button to completely edit every facet of the title.
Setting Up NDI
Select which device to send titles to from the Device option in the Settings menu.
Select the NDI option.
Note: On Windows systems you can also select AirSend, the classic two channel TriCaster option.
With NDI selected, each Playlist tab becomes a unique NDI channel.
To create a new NDI channel, just add a tab by clicking on the + to the right of the tabs.
Click directly in the tab name to change it. This becomes the NDI channel name.
In this example project, we have three NDI channels - "Bugs", "Lower 3rds" and "Scoreboard."
Note: With AirSend, each tab is not a unique channel. Right click on the tab to select which of the two channels to use.
TriCaster Setup (3.2)
TriCaster 3.2 supports NDI, but still within the contraints of two channels, assigned to NET1 and NET2.
To select the NDI receive channel, click on the setup button for NET1 or NET2.
The drop-down menu displays every NDI channel currently available from Titler Live. Simply click on a channel to select it.
TriCaster Setup (4.0)
To set up TriCaster 4.0 software to receive NDI from Titler Live, click on the Setup Button for one of the Inputs.
Note that it displays every NDI channel currently availabe from Titler Pro Live. Simply click on a channel to select it.
Playing The Title
For the easiest way to quickly play titles, use Auto Live Mode. With this mode enabled, clicking on the title's play control will trigger playback.
Select Auto Live Mode from the Settings menu.
Then, to play a title, click on the dot on its far right.
Note: The dot will be replaced with a play button in an upcoming release.
The title plays on its matching NDI channel to the TriCaster.
Note that the dot on the title now becomes a large red dot, indicating it it now live.
Click again on the dot to trigger it to animate out.
Live Monitor
To preview the video being sent to the TriCaster, click on the Monitor button below the preview on the right.
The Live Monitor window opens, displaying a grid of all active NDI channels, each labeled with the channel's name.
In our example, we have three active NDI channels.
This shows exactly what is currently playing on each of the NDI channels.
The color of the channel name indicates the tally status - red for live, green for preview, white for standby.
Multiple Title Playback
Play multiple titles at once on one NDI channel or play individual titles at the same time, each on a separate NDI channel.
You may also play mutiple titles on multiple channels at the same time.
Let's start with how to send graphics independently on multiple channels, then how to send multiple graphics on one channel.
Multiple Channlels
Taking advantage of NDI's unlimited channels, we can put a different graphc on each channel and then mix them together on the TriCaster.
In this example, we have the "Network" bug on tab/ NDI channel "Bugs"
and "Your Name Here" lower third on tab/ NDI channel "Lower 3rds."
Connect each NDI channel individually on the TriCaster as an individual input, for example Net1 and Net 2.
Note: In the case of AirSend, they can ONLY be Net1 and Net2
On the Tricaster, switch each channel on and then trigger playbackof each title in Titler.
It looks like this on the TriCaster:
Multiple Layers
Conversely, you can play two or more titles simultaneously on one channel. This has several advantages:
- It only uses one channel, which is primarily a concern for AirSend users.
- The multiple titles can be prepared, previewed and played from one tab in Titler Live. Whentitles are closely related and laid out as components ofone scene, this can be preferable.
First, we need to know how to play two or more titles at the same time on one channel/ tab.
Unlinking Titles
Normally, titles in the playlist are "linked" so that only one can play at a time. When titles are linked, they can logically play in a sequence, one after another.
However, there is an option to "unlink" a title so that it plays independent on sequence. While the other titles may play one after the other, an unlinked title starts and stops independently.
Any number of titles can play simultaneously on one channel. This is a great way to have several titles that are graphically related. but independently run, available for preview and playback as a combined set.
To unlink a title, go to the icon to the left of the green cache status:
When it is black, it is linked.
Click on it once to turn it white, unlinking it.
Now, it can play independently of the other titles in the playlist.
Click on the dot to play it. then click to play another title in the same playlist. Note that they both play in the live monitor.
In the TriCaster, just connect the one "Lower 3rds" channel. there is no need to have two channels.
Both titles appear together as one overlay.
NewTek Macros
Use TriCaster macro commands to remotely control titles from the switcher.
The following charts assume you are already familiar with setting up and executing TriCaster macro commands.
Each macro command uses the Key 0 and Value 0 parameters to set the command and which title to operate on.
Communications | |
newblue | Determines that the Tricaster will be talking to NewBlue through the chosen channel |
Actions [Key in Tricaster]
nb-link | This puts a title in a Linked state. |
nb-unlink | This puts a title in an Unlinked state. |
nb-auto | Plays the current title out and/or plays in the title/s designated as NEXT. |
nb-autoin | Takes out the current title (no animation) and then plays in the title/s designated as NEXT. |
nb-inout | Plays the next action in the Playlist, whether it is In or Out. When it is In, it acts on the title/s designated as NEXT. |
nb-in | Forces In for the designated title regardless of its state. If that title is already in, it does nothing. |
nb-out | Forces Out for the designated title, regardless of its state. If that title is already out, it does nothing. |
nb-setnext | Assigns Yellow/Purple to the designated title. If the title was already set as NEXT, it does nothing. |
nb-unsetnext | Removes the NEXT state from the designated title/s. If the title was not in a NEXT state, it does nothing. |
nb-take | Takes the current title out and/or cuts in the designated title/s without showing animation. |
nb-prev | Plays out the current title and/or plays in the last title which was previously live, regardless of its state. This action does not need a designated title, because the designated title is implied in its definition. This does what the Left Arrow key does. |
Designators [Value in Tricaster]
nb-tl:samplename | Designates a specific title by name. Type the name after the colon. For example, "nb-tl:nameoftitle". |
nb-next | Designates whichever title/s are in a NEXT (yellow or pink) state. |
nb-na | Designator is not applicable, because the chosen action implies the title designation in its own definition. |
nb-first | Designates the first title in the playlist |
nb-last | Designates the last title in the playlist |
nb-abovelive | Designates the title above the hightest title in the list which is live |
nb-belowlive | Designates the title below the lowest title in the list which is live |
nb-abovenext | Designates the title above the hightest title in the list marked as next |
nb-belownext | Designates the title below the lowest title in the list marked as next |
nb-all | Designates all titles in playlist |
