Shear

Shear transitions between two video clips by twisting the images with a shearing blur on two axes.

Setup

Use the controls to manipulate the effect's behavior.

  • H Shear sets the Horizontal shearing. When the image is sheared horizontally, it progressively blurs more to the sides as it moves up from the center point of the shear operation. This works in combination with Direction which sets the shear direction (left or right).
  • V Shear sets the Vertical shearing. When the image is sheared vertically, it progressively blurs more to the top and bottom as it moves  outward from the center point of the shear operation. This also works in combination with Direction which sets the shear direction (up or down).
  • Angle rotates the shear blur in degrees.
  • Direction sets the direction of the blur from the original image. By default, the blur direction is 0, indicating blurring in both directions. Turn to the left to shift the blur to the left side of the image, or turn to the right to shift the blur in that direction.
  • Set the origin of the shear blur with the Center control. Either drag the knob or type in X and Y values.
  • Cross Fade sets the percentage of the transition that includes a cross fade of the image from first to second clip. Turn to the left for an abrupt switch between images. Turn to the right for an increasingly gradual mix.
  • Strong shears results in faded picture edges. This occurs because when the original image is twisted in to create the blur, it leaves the edges exposed. You can select the background to display behind the edges by clicking on one of the buttons in the Background box:
    • First Clip displays the clip entering the transition as background.
    • Second Clip displays the clip leaving the transition as background.
    • Transparent stores the fade level in the alpha channels so alternate images or footage can be placed in the background.
    • Blended displays the mix of the two video clips as background.
